Key Signs of an Eye Infection

Your eyes have a way of telling you when something is wrong. While symptoms can vary, there are several common indicators that you may be dealing with an eye infection. Be on the lookout for persistent redness, itching or a gritty feeling, unusual discharge (yellow, green, or watery), swelling of the eyelids, and increased sensitivity to light. If you experience one or more of these signs, it's your body's signal to pay attention and take action.

Understanding Common Types of Infections

The term "eye infection" covers several different conditions, most commonly caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Conjunctivitis, or "pink eye," is perhaps the most well-known, causing inflammation of the membrane covering your eye. Other common issues include styes (a painful lump on the eyelid) and keratitis (an infection of the cornea), which can be more serious.

Immediate At-Home Care (And What to Avoid)

While you wait to see a doctor, there are a few things you can do. Apply a clean, cool compress to soothe irritation and be sure to wash your hands frequently. Most importantly, do not touch or rub your eyes, as this can worsen the infection or spread it. Avoid using old eye makeup or sharing towels. We strongly advise against using leftover eye drops from a previous issue, as they may be inappropriate for your current condition and could even make it worse.

When You Need an Emergency Optometrist

You should see one of our local eye doctors promptly if you experience significant eye pain, changes in your vision, extreme light sensitivity, or if your symptoms don't improve after a couple of days. As your emergency optometrist, we are equipped to diagnose the specific cause of your infection and prescribe the correct treatment, such as antibiotic or antiviral eye drops, to provide relief and prevent complications.

If you're experiencing the signs of an eye infection, the team at Optical Illusionz is here to help. Contact one of our multiple locations to schedule an appointment and let us take care of you.
